This
model of the S.S. Waratah was commissioned by Turners
Shipping, Durban ,
whose founder David Turner was lost with the vessel. His family were also on
board - Mrs Turner and their five children aged between 14 and 3; their
destination was London .
The Turners were among the approximately 40 passengers who embarked at Durban . Including the
passengers from Australia
and the Waratah's crew, there were 211 souls on board. The
ship sailed from Durban
at 8 p.m. on Monday 26 July 1909..
The
model stands in the boardroom of Turners Shipping and is just over a metre in
length. The portrait shown behind the model is of David Turner.
