Hello to all my new followers! Welcome to Mole's Genealogy Blog. I note an old friend, Jacqui Yallup, amongst them - Hi good to hear from you! Met you at Pietermaritzburg Archives years ago if you recall! Best Wishes, Mole
Hi. Do you perhaps have record of a gentleman named Stratten/Stratton or Butler from Ireland. My husband is trying to find details of his grandfather.
Give me a little more info please e.g. possible decade of his arrival in SA, or a date of death, and his full name, or that of his spouse. Did he come here from UK?
We have very little information but this is what we have.
My mom-in-law's name was Edith Butler, ID number 241113 0069 005. She was born in Northern KwaZulu Natal, Mtubatuba or Umfolozi on 13 November 1924 and later moved to Durban. She died in 2000 in Johannesburg. She married Gerhardus Johannes Oosthuizen, ID number 220214 5062 002 on 30 April 1949. He died in 1997. Edith' mom's surname was Stratton so there is some confusion about her dad's surname. He could possibly have been working on a sugar cane farm. He thinks his grandma's name was Elizabeth.
So judging from the above information, his granddad might've come in from Ireland late 1800's. It's a long shot, I know, but I just had to try.
Hi Carmelita, The death years you mention are too comparatively recent to find a reference to these individuals on NAAIRS - more recent estate files would be held at the Master of the Supreme or High Court, in the area where death took place. You would need a professional researcher to searcher estate files at the Master's office - they are filed chronologically by date of death not by surname. It might be difficult to find a researcher prepared to undertake such a search and of course a you'd get would be details of the deceased, not info on your husband's grandfather. The same applies to Gerhardus Oosthuizen - you do not mention an area of death so perhaps it is not known. That would make things very complicated. For the gentleman from Ireland, if he died here there may be an estate file reference on NAAIRS - search under his two possible surnames with a date parameter if possible. To try to find an arrival for him in SA by ship would be a waste of time unless you first locate a deceased estate and get an area of death. Sorry, not an easy one. Bet Wishes, Mole
If you have no forename for Butler/Stratton etc you would have to go through thousands of references on NAAIRS - try to narrow the search by including a forename and a date parameter e.g. approx date of death, otherwise not feasible.
Hi. Thanks for all your help. We've found hubby's grandfather, Charles Butler. We were hoping he was born in Ireland but he was born in Port Elizabeth.
Well done on establishing his birthplace. It is another case of family belief putting a red herring in the way of progress! All the best, Mole.
