Rhodes, Ernest Alfred; photographer Augustus Scott of London
Ernest Alfred Rhodes married Elizabeth Charlotte King, sister of my great grandmother, Alice Mary King. A Londoner by birth, he later owned the Federal Hotel in Durban.
The photographer was Augustus Scott of the Oxford Studio, 4 Oxford Street, London.
Many early ophthalmic opticians and photographers were adherents of freemasonry. The mounts of Cartes de visites produced for the Oxford Studio bore a prominent Masonic set square and compass, usually on the back and sometimes on the front as well. It is not known whether Ernest Rhodes was a freemason and for that reason chose Augustus Scott to take his photograph.
